Self-Care

by Valarie Lovelight

It seems like it’s almost impossible to focus on ourselves without being made to feel like we’re being selfish. It is even possible for us to feel guilty for taking some time for ourselves when we are stressed, overwhelmed, or tired. The truth is you must find time for self-care. If you don’t have any time to rest, recharge, and refresh yourself, you’ll run out of energy. When this happens, your health suffers, your family suffers and you may just snap at others occasionally because you’re tired.

You can’t be all things to all people all the time or even most of the time. To fully be there for others, you need to take a step back and take care of yourself, including rest.

Taking care of yourself is a luxury you can afford. Find simple and non-costly ways to enjoy and relax if money is tight. It might be kicking everyone out of the house or locking yourself away (if you can do it) with a sign on the door “Do Not Disturb” for however long. You could also take a long bath while listening to music or reading a book. Enjoy your favorite shows and movies. Take in a play. Visit the park or a museum. Consider a staycation in the area or at a spa. Making time for yourself shouldn’t feel like a guilty indulgence; it’s healthy. Maybe your family will thank you for it!
